Dogs that are lost or living on the street often find themselves politely seeking help from humans, despite their hesitation to approach too closely. Instead, they patiently wait, hoping for a compassionate human to notice them.
In this heartwarming story, we follow a dog who spent his days at the entrance of a school, yearning for someone to rescue him.
A Sweet Everyday Welcome

Caleb Schaffer, a dedicated teacher at an elementary school in Houston, Texas, noticed the dog as he arrived at work. The curious dog greeted him with a wagging tail. Though Schaffer was intrigued, his responsibilities called, and he had to start his day.
“He was sitting right outside the main door, and his tail started thumping when he saw me,” Schaffer recalled in an interview with The Dodo.

Throughout the day, Schaffer couldn’t stop thinking about the dog. After his classes ended, he went outside to check if the dog was still there. To his surprise, the dog was gone—likely spooked by the local animal shelter staff who had attempted to catch him.
Yet, the dog was back the next morning, and the cycle repeated. This time, Schaffer noticed the poor condition of the dog’s skin and his emaciated frame, solidifying his decision to help.
Third Time’s A Charm

On the third day, Schaffer was determined not to let the dog slip away again. He coaxed the dog into his car and took him home, asking his wife to keep the dog company while he finished his workday.
After school, Schaffer reached out to various rescue organizations in Texas, but they were all at capacity. Determined to help, he took the dog to a local animal shelter for medical care and a bath.
“I figured some basic vet care at the shelter was better than nothing. He was really suffering,” Schaffer explained.

The dog, now named Clive, had his story shared on Facebook, capturing the attention of Lucky Lab Rescue and Adoption. They swiftly found a foster home for him.
Schaffer continues to share Clive’s story with his students, using it as a lesson about the importance of helping stray animals. “There are so many strays everywhere here. It’s given me an opportunity to talk about spaying, neutering, heartworm prevention, and the reality of shelters,” he said.

Though it’s unclear if Clive has been adopted, one thing is certain: he is a well-mannered and happy dog who deserves all the love in the world.
