This Tiny Dog Being The Sweetest Foster Mom For Kittens Will Warm Your Heart

She’s such a tiny dog, but she’s got so much love packed into her little body. Kona is a bundle of love and compassion, making her the most endearing foster mom to kittens.

While most dogs might chase after cats, Kona’s instincts are purely maternal and nurturing. When her hooman mom first brought home kittens to foster, Kona instinctively knew what to do: she embraced them and loved them as her own.

Seeing dog-cat friendships used to be rare. However, times have changed, and these heartwarming relationships are now more common, especially in homes with multiple pets where cats and dogs coexist harmoniously.

Despite this, dogs acting as moms for kittens is still a rarity. Every time I see a dog caring for kittens as her own, it melts my heart like ice cream on a hot summer day. Kona is one of those exceptional dogs, and her story left me in tears. She captured my heart as a truly special pup.

Kona’s hooman mom, Asa, initially took her in as a foster. Gradually, this tiny dog became an irreplaceable part of Asa’s life, leading to her permanent adoption in Alexandria, Virginia. Kona’s own experiences of searching for a home make her especially empathetic.

When kittens were about to arrive for fostering, Asa was nervous, fearing Kona might reject them. But Kona’s reaction was beyond heartwarming.

An Unexpected Bond

This sweet dog was super mellow and excited about having kittens in her home. Kona welcomed them with open paws, ready to care for them. She wasn’t just their new friend; she became their foster mom!

“From the get-go, she was amazing. Whenever they’re small, she carries them by the scruff, just like a mother cat would,” Asa shared in a video.

Despite her loving nature, Kona wasn’t always so relaxed. Her journey from Tennessee to New York and finally to Virginia with Asa was filled with challenges. Kona was anxious when Asa first adopted her, and it took months for her to unwind. Fostering puppies didn’t help either because Kona wasn’t really a fan of other dogs.

Then, Asa introduced kittens, and that’s when Kona’s nurturing side truly blossomed.

New Friends Are Good

Dogs usually enjoy the company of other dogs, but for Kona, her own kind was too overwhelming. Puppies are often energetic and tireless, which was too much for sweet Kona. She needed something softer and cuddlier.

Enter the kittens, who needed a loving mom. Kona stepped up, becoming an essential part of their socialization process.

“So from there, she kinda became my left-hand man in the sense of trying to socialize them… She brings us all together,” Asa added.

Every kitty that enters this Virginia home knows where to find a safe harbor. Kona is always there to offer snuggles, wet kisses, or simply be a mom when needed. This brave little dog didn’t give birth to the kittens, but she loves them with a mother’s heart.
