Shelter staff deeply understand the longing in their sweet residents’ eyes for a loving home and a family that would cherish them unconditionally. This dream is at the heart of every shelter pup’s wish, and their happiness remains incomplete until it becomes a reality.
To help these adorable pups find their forever homes, the Metro East Humane Society hosts an annual adoption event on Black Friday. Generous sponsors cover the adoption fees, making it easier for these lovable animals to find new families.
This year’s event turned out to be the most successful yet. The staff’s hearts swelled with joy as 94 animals, including 64 dogs, found their loving families.
Among the heartwarming scenes of new beginnings, one pup stood alone—Frito, a true sweetheart of the shelter.
Frito Gets Overlooked

When the staff realized that Frito had been overlooked, their disappointment was palpable.
“She is a very lovely and deserving girl, so it was a shame that she was overlooked and no one came forward for her. We all know how special Frito is, so to see so many people pass her by was upsetting,” shared Ali Hillard, the program manager, with The Dodo.
Returning to the shelter in Madison County, Illinois, with Frito was a somber journey. The shelter, usually filled with noise and activity, fell silent as they entered.
Frito’s eyes showed her sadness when she realized she was the only one left. Before she was settled back into her kennel, her shelter friends lovingly held her beautiful face, cuddled her, and kissed her goodnight, promising her that everything would be alright.
Frito Refuses To Be Sad And Continues Playing

The next day, Frito showed her resilience. Despite having no one to play with, she refused to let sadness engulf her. She ran around the yard, joyfully playing with her ‘imaginary friends,’ as the shelter staff captured in a TikTok video.
With her stuffed animals in her mouth, Frito looked as happy as ever, running around and enjoying herself.

The shelter staff hold onto hope that Frito will soon meet her forever parents. She is a wonderful pup who just wants to live life to the fullest.
“Frito is really not a picky girl. Her ideal forever home would be any home looking for a dog that is a healthy mix of both sweet and cuddly while also being super silly and playful,” Hillard described.
Recently, the staff shared on TikTok that Frito has moved to a foster home, where she is finally experiencing the warmth and comfort of a real home.
Just like her friends at the shelter, we are all rooting for Frito to find her forever home soon. This sweet pup deserves boundless love and adoration.
