Watching a beloved pet suffer is a heart-wrenching experience for any dog lover, but for veterinarians, it’s a daily reality. These compassionate professionals are driven by a deep love for animals, yet they are often faced with decisions that test their emotional limits.
One such moment came for Dr. Oliver Reeve, co-founder of Onewa Road Veterinary Hospital, when he was confronted with an unimaginable request. A distraught owner brought in a tiny, seven-week-old Golden Doodle puppy named Toby, asking that the puppy be euthanized due to a birth defect.

Despite his extensive experience, Dr. Reeve was taken aback. He knew the request was made out of love, not cruelty. “The owner sought veterinary care for a puppy in pain, which takes courage,” Dr. Reeve shared with Newsweek. “They took responsibility and sought appropriate care. That’s something I respect deeply.”
Regaining his composure, Dr. Reeve quickly realized there might be another way. He couldn’t bring himself to end Toby’s life, especially when he believed he could help the pup overcome his defect. With a hopeful heart, Dr. Reeve offered to take Toby in, free of charge, and give him a chance at life. The owner, relieved, immediately agreed.
A New Beginning

Though Dr. Reeve didn’t disclose the specifics of Toby’s condition, he was confident he could help the puppy live a full life. Toby joined Dr. Reeve’s already bustling household, which included a dog, a cat, a rat, and three rescued rabbits. That very evening, Toby found himself in a new home, surrounded by love.
Two surgeries later, Toby was on the road to recovery, with one more procedure planned once he’s older. His transformation from a puppy facing euthanasia to a joyful, thriving pup was nothing short of miraculous.
A Bright Future Ahead

Toby’s future now shines brightly, thanks to Dr. Reeve, who saw the value in every life. The puppy is now the clinic’s “vet’s dog,” where he’s adored by the entire staff. At home, Toby is learning to coexist with his new family, including Dr. Reeve’s other dog, Danni.
Dr. Reeve’s decision not only saved Toby’s life but also brought immense joy to his own. “This was the most special decision I’ve ever made,” he reflected, grateful for the opportunity to give Toby the life he deserves.
In a world where difficult decisions are often necessary, Dr. Reeve’s choice to embrace compassion made all the difference, turning a heartbreaking situation into a story of hope and love.
