These days, it’s sadly common to come across a neglected dog abandoned by a heartless owner. But it’s rare to find one on your very doorstep. Yet, this is exactly what happened to Rena Perkins Schlueter, a resident of Orange, California, who discovered a strange furry creature outside her home. At first, she couldn’t even identify it, which highlighted the alarming condition of the dog.
When she finally realized it was a desperate canine, she was shocked and her heart broke.
Sad Reality of Neglect

Rena only recognized the creature as a dog because of the enormous mats of dirty fur. It was such a tragic sight that she immediately tried to help him. Unfortunately, the dog was so frightened that he bolted away, leaving Rena unable to follow him. Despite a short search, she couldn’t find him and continued on her way, secretly hoping to see him again and rescue him from his misery.
Her wish came true when she returned home. The dog was in the same condition and almost the same spot. However, something had changed – this time, he didn’t run away but showed a true desire to be helped.
Amazing Transformation That Went Viral

Despite the dog’s interest, he was still very timid and barked whenever Rena got too close. So, she decided to call in the professionals for help. “I tried to approach him, but he was very scared and probably in pain,” Rena told Rocky Kanaka. “I didn’t know what to do, so I called Animal Control. They deemed it an emergency and had someone out within probably 20 minutes.”
This was the best decision she could have made. Professionals are best equipped to handle dogs exhibiting aggressive behavior. Meanwhile, Rena did what she could to help. Wanting to raise awareness, she posted the dog’s photo in a Facebook group for Orange residents. The post quickly went viral, garnering attention and support.
The dog was taken to OC Animal Care, where he was sedated for grooming and a medical evaluation due to his distress. Despite the challenges, the dog underwent an amazing transformation. Rena’s efforts were crucial, but we must also acknowledge the help from other good-hearted people.
Happy Ending Sooner Than Expected

After being cared for at the shelter, it was discovered that the dog weighed only 12 pounds and was about 10 years old. Despite his age, he had no major health issues and looked amazing after being groomed. He was soon ready for adoption, and shelter staff expected he might stay with them for a while due to his age and history.
To their surprise, he found a forever home in just one day. Deanna Briggs, a member of the Facebook group, fell in love with him after seeing his picture and reading his story. In just a few days, the poor, matted dog transformed into a beautiful pup who had never been happier, thanks to the immense love from the right person.
