Only love holds the incredible power to heal even the most wounded and fearful hearts.
Sandy, a shelter dog yearning for human affection, was held back by a deep-rooted fear that prevented her from embracing love.
Rescued from the tough streets of south Chicago, Sandy bore the marks of her past—numerous scars and health issues that told a story of hardship. The compassionate team at One Tail At A Time took Sandy under their wing, determined to help her shed her fears and experience the beauty life has to offer.

Soon after Elie, a warm-hearted human, signed up to foster with the Chicago-based rescue, she crossed paths with Sandy. The timid pup left a lasting impression.
Though Sandy’s sweetness was undeniable, her fear made it hard for her to trust and accept the love she so desperately needed.
“I’d never seen a dog so shut down and scared, yet you could tell she wanted to be loved,” Elie shared with GeoBeats Animals.
Elie decided to bring Sandy into her home as a foster. But when the time came to leave the shelter, Sandy curled up in the car, making herself as small as possible—a clear sign of her deep-seated fear.
Arriving at Elie’s home, Sandy’s fear paralyzed her, forcing Elie to gently carry her out of the car. The days that followed were equally challenging, with Sandy terrified of nearly everything.
“I’d take her outside, and she’d cower in fear at the sight of a street sign. Even something as harmless as a bench appeared terrifying to her,” Elie recalled.
Determined to help Sandy overcome the fears that kept her from truly living, Elie showered her with support and love.

Gradually, Sandy began to feel secure in her new environment. She formed a bond with Ziggy, Elie’s other dog, and the two quickly became inseparable playmates.
As days turned into weeks, Sandy’s confidence blossomed. She started seeking out cuddles from her foster mom, revealing the gentle soul she had been hiding.
Recognizing that her home had become Sandy’s safe place, Elie felt their bond deepening.
“She’s a sensitive dog who longs for love,” Elie explained. “Sandy wants to show love, but she’s deeply affected by her surroundings. When she feels safe, she truly enjoys life, but the world around her can deeply impact her.”
After three months of fostering, Elie knew Sandy was meant to stay. She made it official by adopting her, giving Sandy the forever home she had always deserved.
Now, Sandy’s Instagram is filled with joyful photos of her new life. She loves her walks with her mom and brother, Ziggy, her tail wagging and her smile wide.
The love Elie has poured into Sandy’s life has brought the pup immeasurable joy. Sandy is living her best life, and she simply can’t stop smiling.
