When a Good Samaritan in St. Louis, Missouri, noticed a frightened pup hiding behind a dumpster, they quickly contacted Stray Rescue of St. Louis for help.
Donna Lochmann and her team promptly arrived at the scene. There, they found the dog, who they later named Joan of Bark, trying to remain hidden from the world. Quiet and seemingly resigned to her fate, Joan of Bark’s sorrowful, fear-filled eyes met Lochmann’s as soon as she spoke.
Bringing Her To Safety

Lochmann sat down beside Joan of Bark, offering her Vienna sausages. Though still unsure, the hungry pup quickly devoured the meal. After spending some time with Joan of Bark, Lochmann gently placed a leash around her neck. Joan of Bark hesitated, prompting Lochmann to give her some time. When she finally stood, the rescuers discovered why she was so terrified: one of her back legs was broken, likely from being hit by a car. Saddened, the team carefully coaxed Joan of Bark into a crate, reassuring her that she was now safe.
“She’s fearful and in pain, but who wouldn’t be in her position? It’s okay, baby, you are safe now! We got you,” Stray Rescue of St. Louis shared in a heartfelt Facebook post.
At the clinic, the vet examined Joan of Bark and took X-rays of her injured leg. The kind staff then gave her a soothing bath, which she enjoyed immensely, gazing at her caregivers with eyes full of gratitude. Despite the vet team’s efforts, Joan of Bark’s leg had to be amputated due to the severity of the injury.
Receiving A Lot Of Love

After a successful surgery, Joan of Bark began her road to recovery. Once healed, she moved to a shelter, free from pain and surrounded by love from her rescuers. Joan of Bark cherished every moment, especially the cuddles, and the love she received gave her hope for finding a forever home.
Despite being a tripod, Joan of Bark thrived, joyfully doing zoomies in the yard. She was placed in a wonderful foster home where, although initially timid, she quickly settled in. Treated with affection by her foster family, Joan of Bark experienced the warmth and comfort of a home, making friends with her furry foster sister and enjoying their time together.
Now, Joan of Bark is on a quest to find her forever family. Though it’s unclear if her biggest wish has come true yet, it’s certain that such a lovely pup will soon experience the unconditional love that only a forever family can provide.
