When Cindy Nash, founder of Nicholas’ Pet Haven in Texas, received a call about a little pup in distress, she sprang into action.

The caller, living near a cemetery across a busy road, told Cindy about a dog that had been surviving by the roadside for a year. As the dog grew bolder, the caller feared it might try to cross the dangerous road, risking its life. She pleaded with Cindy to rescue the pup.

Without hesitation, a rescue team was dispatched that same day. While setting up traps, they encountered Dr. Harshivinderjit S. Bains, who had been silently caring for Truvy, the dog, from afar.

“He told me he really loves that dog and wanted to take her home. She had been living inside his clinic as it was being built and managed to stay there all last winter when it was so cold. He provided her with bedding, food, and water for a year but could never touch her,” Cindy recounted.

Later that day, Cindy returned to check on the traps and found Truvy waiting patiently in one of them. She decided to bring Truvy home. Unsure of how Truvy would react, Cindy carefully opened the cage. As soon as the door opened, Truvy dashed out and jumped right into Cindy’s lap, leaving her in shock!

After giving Truvy a much-needed bath to remove sticker burrs, Cindy noticed how relieved and happy Truvy was. It was heartwarming to see her so content and grateful.

The following day, Cindy took Truvy to the vet for a checkup. To her surprise, the vet discovered that Truvy was microchipped.

Cindy immediately contacted the family listed on the microchip. They were ecstatic! They shared that when they moved to Texas a year ago, they didn’t realize how small Truvy was. She had squeezed through their iron fence and disappeared into the world.

“We immediately canvassed the neighborhood, on foot and in cars. For the next few months I drove, searching for her. I also emailed all the vet clinics, shelters, and rescue groups within 60 miles in case she was picked up by someone that wasn’t local,” said Amy Logan, Truvy’s mom.

Brave Truvy had been missing for nearly 13 months before meeting her savior, Cindy. Fortunately, Amy had kept Truvy’s microchip information up to date, clinging to the hope of a reunion. And it paid off!

The family was overjoyed to learn that Truvy, despite living on the streets, was alive and well. The very next day, Cindy brought Truvy to Amy, reuniting them.

“It took her a minute to figure out that it was her mom. By the time they got her home, she was settling down and knew she was home safe and sound. She was just one lucky little girl,” Cindy said.

While Dr. Bains felt a pang of sadness for not being able to offer Truvy a permanent home, he was overjoyed to hear she was back where she belonged. Amy couldn’t express enough gratitude to Dr. Bains for protecting her pup in such harsh conditions.

This story is a powerful reminder to never give up hope and the importance of microchipping your dog.
