Recently, I came across a statement that said rescuing dogs is 50% sadness and 50% relief, and honestly, it’s spot on.
When people first encounter abandoned or stray animals, it’s genuine heartbreak to see so many dogs suffering. You just want to help them all.
The other half is relieved when you see that a rescued puppy is finally safe and has a bright future with a new family. These are the precious moments anyone would want for their pet. In this article, we’ll share a rescue story where a dog was saved from euthanization and got a second chance thanks to a kind-hearted man.

Nowadays, it’s sadly common for many owners to surrender their pets for euthanasia due to costly medical treatments.
Gregory, the Beagle, faced a similar fate. He was almost put down until Joe Kirk came to his rescue, just two days before the scheduled euthanasia. This was the best possible outcome, as Joe and his wife, Schenley, run a non-profit organization called Hound Rescue and Animal Sanctuary in Findlay, Ohio. Their mission is to help neglected animals find new homes and provide foster care for older and unadoptable dogs.

Schenley shared on Facebook: “Gregory is one thankful and appreciative Beagle! He KNOWS he is SAFE! He is heartworm-positive and will be going through treatment, but he knows he is in good hands! We will get him healthy and provide him all the love he so deserves and a wonderful future!”

Once Gregory was safe and in the Kirks’ care, they took him to a veterinarian for heartworm treatment. Shortly after, he was put up for adoption, and it didn’t take long for a family to come knocking.
Gregory found his forever home and is now happily living with his new family and a new Beagle sibling.
Schenley beautifully stated: “We are often asked how many dogs we have saved. The answer that always comes to mind is, we have saved one more. One more dog is safe and will have all the love and respect they deserve. One more dog will be properly fed and receive needed veterinary care. One more dog will have a loving forever home. There is no better feeling and nothing in life that is more fulfilling.”
A Lesson in Kindness

If there’s anything to take away from this story, it’s that a little kindness goes a long way with dogs and that there’s always more we can do to help those in need.
