A Heartbreaking Loss

Karla Swindle, a woman with a deep love for animals, opened S & K Quarter Horses Farm in Fayette, Alabama, to care for horses and other animals. Over the years, she witnessed many stories—some joyful, others sorrowful. One story, in particular, left a lasting impression on her heart.
In March, a 22-year-old mare on her farm gave birth to a foal. What should have been a joyous event turned tragic when, just seven days later, the mare fell seriously ill and passed away.
The young foal, named Tye, was devastated, having lost his mother so early in life. He seemed alone in the world, until love and support came from an unexpected source.
An Unlikely Source of Comfort

After the mare’s death, Swindle stayed with the foal in the barn, offering as much comfort as she could. To her surprise, her dog, Zip, joined them that night and refused to leave Tye’s side.
“He was whining,” Swindle recalled. “You could tell that Zip knew something was wrong that night.”
Zip sensed Tye’s grief and was determined to provide comfort. Swindle, moved to tears, watched as her dog lay beside the foal, offering a unique blend of mourning and consolation.
For the next six weeks, Zip never left Tye’s side. Every time Swindle went to the barn, Zip would rush ahead and wait by the stall, eagerly pushing past her to reach Tye.
“If the foal was laying down, he would go over there and lay his head on him,” Swindle said.
With Zip’s presence, Tye felt relaxed and content. The dog’s companionship was a healing balm for the foal’s broken heart.
Thriving Against the Odds

Over the following months, Tye grew into a healthy, beautiful horse, leaving behind the pains of his early life. Zip, his adoptive dad, watched with pride as Tye thrived.
While Tye now spends most of his time with his older sister, learning to behave like a proper horse, Zip remains a cherished part of his life. Though they spend less time together, their bond remains unbreakable.
Word of this touching friendship spread quickly in Fayette and beyond. When Karla posted a video of Zip and Tye on her Facebook profile, it melted hearts across the U.S. and around the world.
This dog and horse, despite their differences, demonstrated the power of true love and friendship, reminding us all of the incredible capacity for animals to heal and support each other in times of need.
