When you see a dog at a shelter, it’s impossible to know the heart-wrenching stories behind those sad, soulful eyes. But Rhoudy, a three-year-old Terrier mix, brought to the Greenville Humane Society in South Carolina, has a story that stunned everyone.
Rhoudy seemed like any other shelter dog when he first arrived—until the staff discovered a small, handwritten note tucked among his belongings. The note, scrawled by a child, along with a drawing of Rhoudy, moved everyone to tears.

The note, though brief, was one of the most emotional letters the caregivers had ever read. It was clear that Rhoudy’s family had to make the difficult decision to surrender him, but the heartbreak of one young family member couldn’t be hidden. The message read:
“We love you, Rhoudy. I will miss you, Rhoudy. But you’re going home! And I hope your new people love you as much as I do.”
Despite their efforts, the shelter staff couldn’t track down Rhoudy’s previous family. The only thing they could do was respond to the note through social media, hoping that Rhoudy’s young owner would see it.
“We know how hard it was to say goodbye. But you were so brave and so strong. Sometimes hard decisions have to be made, but he knows how much you love him,” GHS shared in a heartfelt Facebook post.
The post quickly went viral, touching hearts across the nation. GHS reassured everyone that Rhoudy was now in the right place.
“He’s doing so well. He’s been on many walks and has all the toys you brought him, right in his bed. He’s being showered with love. Yes, he misses you. But he will always love you. Don’t ever forget that, OK,” the South Carolina rescue added.

Rhoudy’s journey hasn’t been easy, but he’s now safe and surrounded by people who care deeply for him. He’s no longer just a surrendered shelter dog—he’s a lively, playful pup who adores being the center of attention.
“I’m a bit of a rough-and-tumble kind of guy and I love to play and roughhouse with other dogs… I’m looking for a family who will give me lots of love and attention, and who will keep me active and engaged,” the rescue shared on their website.
Rhoudy is eagerly waiting for the day he finds his forever family—a family that will love him just the way he is. One thing is certain: Rhoudy is a fun-loving, adventurous dog who would make an incredible companion. He’s not just a keeper—he’s a treasure.
